Beach Towel Buying Guide
The designers and merchants who first collaborated to manufacture and market beach towels may have underestimated how popular and useful beach towels would become. With so many exciting beach towels to choose from these days, how do you ever decide?
Whether shopping for a beach towel or any beach gear, savvy shoppers start with a set of basic questions before they start shopping, then they form a shopping list for the beach. Though they may head out with a clearly-defined plan, they stay flexible, ready to change their mind when presented with a better option.
“Smart Sourcing” Your New Beach Towel
When you’re ready to shop for your new beach towel, “smart source” it. You have more beach towel buying options today than ever before. So by all means, put those paper coupons, digital coupons and online-only discount offers to work. Look for discounts on beach towels near the end of the summer and warm weather vacation season. Then keep an eye out for “most valued customers only” discount offers from your local retail stores.
Second-hand stores may not be your favorite places to shop, but stores like this that resell previously-owned goods are worth a periodic visit. You just might find the perfect and unique designed beach towel there, only gently-used and sometimes still brand-new!
Some stores sell liquidated, overstocked products and are becoming an increasingly popular source for savvy shoppers looking for amazing discounts. The secret to success for shopping at discounters like these is to become familiar with the stores near you. Visit them frequently because their inventory changes constantly. If you have no success, you may still find the perfect towel for the perfect price next time!
Finally, don’t neglect to check out local garage sales. If you enjoy scouting out these shopping niches, hunting for bargains, then go for it.
Caring for Your Beach Towel
Imagine that you’ve found your perfect beach towel. Now you’re ready to head for the beach with it, right? Not so fast. Be sure to launder your new towel first. You don’t want to skip this important step.
That beautiful cotton beach towel has been sitting on the display shelf, waiting for you to buy it and take it home. To keep it looking good, that store has probably treated the towel with a special fabric softener to maintain its shelf appearance. However, that fabric softener diminishes the towel’s ability to absorb moisture. To resolve this problem, you need to be wash it before use.
Microfiber beach towels may seem easy to care for, and they usually are, but you need to wash and dry them differently than standard cotton towels. First, don’t treat them with fabric softeners. Second, don’t dry them with heat. Ignore these manufacturer guidelines at your own risk. If you do so, you may end up with a misshapen, nonabsorbent, microfiber beach towel. Your microfiber beach towels should survive many laundry cycles, but only if you follow their proper care guidelines.
Do you really want to re-invent the wheel when it comes to caring for your beach towel? Nearly every commercially-made beach towel available online or in your local stores comes with a wash-and-care label stitched into the edge or the corner. Those care instructions were tailored to the material and characteristics of your towel.
It’s a good idea to review the care instructions label before you buy a towel, too. Will you need to wash your beach towel in hot or cold water? Will you need to dry it in the dryer on a high or low temperature setting, or is it an air-dry-only product? Is it averse to bleach and fabric softener? If so, then ignore this information at your own peril. You may destroy the beauty of your new towel or significantly reduce its absorbency.
Only you know how much care you want to put into laundering your beach towel. If you want a wash-and-go beach towel, then choose a microfiber or cotton towel with high synthetic content.
Then again, you might be tempted to try an old-fashioned, online “home recipe” for laundering your beach towel. If so, then beware. Not all DIY laundering formulas work. At the least, some will be ineffective at cleaning your beach towel properly. At the worst, some of them will ruin your once-lovely beach towel entirely.
To provide your new beach towel with the best possible care, follow these basic instructions:
- Follow the manufacturer guidelines every time.
- Wash your towel after every visit to the pool, beach, stadium, and park.
- If the label says “air dry only,” then air dry ONLY.
- Let it dry completely before you fold it and store it away. A damp towel is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and mildew.
When you use a towel at the beach, it picks up microscopic content that you aren’t even aware of. This content includes cells came from your body, cells that came from other microorganisms, beach particulates (like sand, shell fragments, dried pieces seaweed, and decomposing sea life, etc.). Sounds gross, doesn’t it? This is one of the primary reasons why you need to wash your beach towel after every use.
One last comment about washing your beach towel – following the manufacturer’s laundering guidelines will help you keep the decorative elements of your towel (e.g., fringes, tassels, and sparkly pieces elements) secure and looking good for years to come.
Putting Your Beach Towel to Good Use
Where will you be using your beach towel most often? It should definitely be a mandatory item on your children’s summer camping checklist, and a beach towel is definitely handy at the stadium. Remember the last time you sat on that hot metal bleacher or that sticky plastic seat? Why go subject yourself to that discomfort again? Then, of course, a good beach towel is an essential companion for lying out in the sun at the beach or the pool.
Beach Towel Basics: Which Fabric is the Best?
1. Cotton, the Classic Beach Towel
Beach towels these days come in a number of fabrics. The ancestor towels of your modern beach towel were basically large sheets made of woven cotton or linen. Cotton terrycloth remains a popular choice for many beach towel buyers. A two-ply cotton towel feels so luxurious and comforting as you towel down from your swim. It is also more water absorbent than a standard cotton one-ply terrycloth towel.
Cotton velour beach towels are made of the same cotton terrycloth but what distinguishes it from traditional looped terrycloth is this: the loops on one side of the fabric have been sheared off, giving your velour beach towel a smooth and deliciously plush feeling.
We’ve covered some of the development of Turkish towels, but there is one more thing you might want to know about. What makes these towels so uniquely different from other cotton beach towels? The answer is the cotton fibers woven into Turkish towels. You already know that the region of Bursa, Turkey is celebrated for its cotton. This cotton is considered a premium cotton product that is distinguishable from others by its uniquely long fibers. Towels made of these long fibers are highly valued for their greater softness, absorbency, and their ability to dry more quickly.
Did we talk about Egyptian cotton? Egyptian cotton is similar to Turkish cotton. The fibers from Egypt’s cotton growing region are long. Beach towels of Egyptian cotton are valued for their softness, durability, and long-lasting attractiveness – just like Turkish beach towels.
Many of today’s shoppers are focused on products that are more earth-friendly. If you include yourself among this group, consider beach towels that are a combination of organic cotton and bamboo, a sustainable product derived from the bamboo grass’ viscous fiber. Hemp is another highly sustainable product that is used (typically blended with other natural fibers like cotton) for beach towels. Hemp and hemp-blends are increasing in popularity and availability.
Beach towels are typically (but not always) a bit thinner than a thick bath towel. If the cotton beach towel you are holding and considering for purchase feels exceptionally thin or scratchy, don’t buy it! Thin, scratchy towels of any kind rarely improve with washing. Many of those thin towels wear out quickly, too.
2. Make Way for Microfiber
Microfiber is sometimes referred to as a super-versatile fiber. It may be made of polyester, nylon, polyamide (a blend of polyester and nylon), or a combination of polyester and cotton. Microfiber itself is a totally synthetic product. Its fibers are thinner than a strand of silk. You will be hard put to find sports gear and clothing that doesn’t include microfiber content these days. Your next beach towel may be 100% microfiber or a blend of microfiber and cotton.
You’ve probably seen a diver, swimmer, or surfer toweling down after exiting the water. Chances are that the towel you see is a microfiber towel. Microfiber beach towels are available in various weaves like the familiar waffle weave, and weaves that produce a texture that is smooth, like suede chamois. These towels are often somewhat smaller than the standard beach towel, as well.
Why would you want a nearly or totally synthetic beach towel? Microfiber beach towels lack plushness, but they makes up for that deficit with their absorbency. Microfiber towels are highly moisture-absorbent, able to hold as much as three times the amount of water as an all-cotton or cotton-blend beach towel. Microfiber towels are also durable, lightweight, and easily packable.
The smoother surfaces of microfiber towels make them not only highly attractive AND often nearly “sand-free.” Yup — if you don’t want to bring half of the beach’s sand (trapped in the terry loops) home with you, keep these newer generation smooth-surfaced beach towels in mind.
Don’t forget microfiber’s second cousin, synthetic chamois (aka Shammy) towel. The finish of this synthetic towel is generally smoother and is described as felt-like. Shammies are fairly functional-looking, not glamourous or cute. Chamois beach towels may be a bit smaller than a standard-sized beach towel but good looks and over-sized don’t always matter when you need to towel down. These are functional towels that dry quickly after being wrung out. When dry, they are light and easy to carry from your picnic site back to your car, or when you are hiking the high country. For carrying your other heavy stuff easily at the beach check out the top rated beach cart models here.
Cotton vs Microfiber Beach Towels
Both natural fiber and man made fabric beach towels have good qualities, and those that you don’t prefer.
Let’s consider cotton beach towels, first. Very thin and very modestly-priced cotton towels may serve your beach needs very well today but may not be as attractive and durable in the long-term. Beach towels that are made of Turkish, Egyptian, and pima cotton fibers are well known for their super-absorbency, and softness. Their super absorbency and softness may also come at a higher price tag.
Microfibers seem to become more refined and adaptive with each season. Microfiber beach towels are quick-drying (about 3 times faster than a standard cotton beach towel), and are available in many beautiful colors, patterns, and prints. If packing small and traveling light are important to you, microfiber beats cotton hands down. Some microfiber beach towels can be folded down to nearly book size!
Microfiber beach towels fall a bit behind cotton and cotton-blend towels in several key ways. Shammies’ suede or felt-like surfaces may be smooth enough for general use and tend to be scratchy feeling. Don’t count on your microfiber beach towel to ward off a sudden chill, either. Fast-drying, lightweight, highly compactable – yes!!! Fluffy, soft and warm, — no!!
And, one final word about microfiber towels: some people just can’t seem to become accustomed to the feel of microfiber towels.
Beach Towel Sizes and Shapes
Just as there is rarely a true one-size-fits-all item for everyone, the same can be said of beach towels. It is true that many (or nearly most) beach towels are large and rectangular pieces of fabric. Standard-sized beach towels are approximately 60” x 30” and extra large towels may be 70” x 30” or even larger. Some smaller (13” x 17”) towels are used for a quick wipe down after a high dive or simply because they are more easily packed and carried.
Absolutely nothing says that a beach towel must always be rectangle. Beach towels have strayed beyond those confines and that’s good news when you’re shopping for a newer style of beach towel. Now, you can also choose from beach towels printed and cut in shapes to resemble cupcakes, frogs, unicorns, hamburgers.
Circle beach towel or classic rectangle? You choose. A round (or oval) beach towel can give your picnic site a more sophisticated look. But unless you buy an oversized round or oval beach towel, you may not be able to seat as many people. A half-round towel may be too limiting to accommodate two or more people. But it can be just right for one person sitting on the sand, turf, or bleacher seat.
The classic rectangle often offers more seating room overall. This means potentially more seating for family members, keeping picnic fixings and personal items off uncovered ground, and greater comfort when you want to stretch out for a snooze.
Pestami, Industrialization, and Beach Towels
Let’s take a dive into a bit of beach towel history. Travel back to an earlier time and a far distant place. The time, early 17th century. The place, Bursa, Turkey.
You are probably wondering what industrialization has to do with the 17th century and today’s beach towels. The short answer is: nearly everything! You see, the area surrounding Bursa had been producing fine-quality cotton for centuries. By early 17th century Bursa was already a large and thriving city of industry and commerce. It was producing and marketing pieces of flat woven fabric pieces called “pestamel.”
Early pestamels were plain and of moderate size, typically measuring about 35” x 67”. Pestamels were primarily used for clothing and cloaks. They rapidly gained popularity as bath sheets for wrapping around the body after stepping out of a bath. Plainly woven pestamels gave way to more elaborately woven pestemels embellished with embroidery and tied tassels. Demand for pestamels increased as more people along the vast network of trade routes discovered the value and comfort of pestamel towels.
The Ottoman rulers of 17th century and expanding industrialization changed the look, feel, and future of pestamels. Turkish weavers were continually challenged to make pestamels better: better quality, better appearance, better! These betterment challenges resulted in the development of a fabric known as “havlu,” (Turkish for “with loops”). Havlu was the first looped fiber towel produced.
It was English 18th century industrialists who advanced the production of towels, making looped towels faster and more cost-effective to both the manufacturers and consumers. Today, you recognize this now-ubiquitous cloth by its most familiar name, “terrycloth.” Although terrycloth towels are made around the world, Turkish towels remain the gold standard of quality towels, including beach towels.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why buy a beach towel?
Think about the beach towels you already have. Are they in good condition and still attractive looking? Do you need more beach towels this year?
2. What size and shapes do you want or need?
Sometimes it’s really fun to mix things up a bit. It can be as easy as swapping out current beach towels with new colors and prints. Go upscale and switch from basic terrycloth to more plush textures. How about trying something new, like buying round, circle, oval, or even “cut-out” shaped towels. Beach towel shapes are not limited to only the classic rectangle-shaped towel these days.
3. Colors or prints, attached decorations, stripes or themed?
It is nearly impossible to think of themes that have not been used on beach towels. The solid colors and cabana stripes may be treasured styles by some buyers but you find them very outdated and boring. Beach towels seldom include attached embellishments. The very uses and laundering of beach towels can mean that those attached rhinestones or charming string-like cat whiskers won’t long survive the wear and tear your towels will endure.
Other types of ornamentation include tassels, bands of embroidered braided edging, fringes, and pom-poms. An embroidered band, fringe, or tassels stitched to the towel’s edges of can transform a nice-but-ordinary beach towel into to a towel that is sophisticated and stylish-looking.
4. What do you need this towel for?
Understanding your needs and purposes for beach towels will steer you toward savvier shopping. Let’s say that you just need a basic beach towel to throw down on the sand, a pool lounge, a bleacher seat. Or you might need a modestly priced towel that you won’t grieve over should your kid leave it at summer camp. Where will this towel be traveling to and how will it be serving you?
5. Do you know your price range?
Comparison shopping may be your game and scoring the right towel at the right price means a shopping victory to you. That’s great. Keep these two particular points in mind: 1) not all modestly-priced towels are unworthy to serve you, and 2) a high-end priced towel never guarantees its quality, or that it will meet your long-term beach towel needs as you expect and desire.
Only you know what you want and the price range that your budget allows you to consider. Be happy with that. There are wonderful beach towels that will match your needs and budget perfectly.
5. What other priorities do you have for your new towels?
Proper care of your beach towels can be as basic as wash-n-go or luxurious towels that have very specific washing and drying needs. Let’s say that your new beach towel needs to be super-absorbent, or that it must dry quickly. Perhaps you often wrap your beach towel around you, sarong-like. A soft towel sure feels good on windier days at the beach when you and the little ones get a bit chilled. Beach towels serve you in many ways, don’t they?
